The National Union of Students (NUS) will have a full-time Trans Officer and Liberation campaign, after the Company Law meeting approved the motion in December.
This follows the motion passed at National Conference in April, where delegates voted with a two-thirds majority to create a Trans officer position and liberation campaign.
As it was a proposal to change the NUS Articles of Association (the NUS’s constitution), it required a vote of at least 75% from members at the Company Law meeting in order to be ratified, which it achieved.
This makes the NUS the first organisation in Europe with a dedicated officer to fight for Trans issues.
The meeting took place at the NUS Strategic Conversation conference in Sheffield on Wednesday 14th December. The first Trans officer will be elected at a conference in March.
NUS LGBT+ officers Melantha Chittenden and Noorulann Shahid, shared their delight on Twitter:

Quite emotional rn. I've been involved in the campaign for trans officer for 2+ years now. I'm just so happy it's finally formalised!!!
