UCL picket line moves into student centre

UCL’s student centre has been taken over by staff and students in support of the ongoing University and College Union (UCU) strikes. A video posted on Twitter shows a number of people on the main stairs of the Student Centre, in Bloomsbury, chanting slogans such as “The money’s there, where’s our share?” and “Hey Hey UUK, our pensions’ here to stay.”

One person, shown to be at the top of the stairs with a megaphone, seems to be leading the chants and said at the end, “We’re on picket lines and we want people to stay off campus.”

Today (4 March) has been designated by UCL’s branch of UCU as the Postgraduate Teaching Assistant day of action, striking back against insecure employment contracts and unfair pay and outsourcing.

The UCU strikes have been going on since 20 February and will continue until 13 March. The strike is due to concerns over the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) pension used by university staff, where changes to the scheme would mean staff are worse off in the long-run. Additionally, staff are striking due to pay, equality, casualisation and workloads.
